Abilities are rated on a 10 point rating. Each dot represents a year of institutional instruction. While most Abilities are learned at school, there are a couple exceptions - Athletics, Alertness, Studies and Divination are all acquired talents that cannot be learned past a basic skill level by every person. Your aptitude with these abilities should reflect your attributes. Someone with very low strength and speed, for example, will not be proficient with athletics, and someone will low intelligence will not have a good handle on studies.

History, just like in the Muggle world, is a large part of learning to be a proper witch or wizard in the wizarding world. History on HP:AR covers both magical and mundane history, and is based primarily on your background and the character's upbringing. If you were raised in the wizarding world, your knowledge of Muggle Studeis is likely vague. If you are Muggle Born, chances are that you know little of Wizarding History.

History of Magic is a required study at Hogwarts, taught through all years. Muggle Studies is a mandatory focus at Hogwarts, and classes start in year three.

The use and practice of Charms is the most basic use of a wand that a young witch or wizard can learn. Invoking a charm magically requires both wand movements and vocal cues. Generally, a charm is described as a spell that causes a physical reaction on an inanimate object.

Divination is a required study at Hogwarts for years one through three, and becomes optional afterwards.

Fighting rates your knowledge with melee, brawling, and dueling. This stat is raised by practice and instruction alone, though as in the mundane world, some people find it easier than others. As 11 year old witches and wizards, the Fighting Ability should not be a focus, and should never be more than 1 point.

Dark Arts
The study of Dark Arts is extremely uncommon and not taught or supported in any fashion at Hogwart's school. It is the study of the darker side of magic.

<Staff Note> Dark Arts Ability will be severely restricted and is left completely to staff discretion on if it will be allowed or not. Please respect and accept if you are told you are not allowed to place points into Dark Arts.

The Studies Ability measures your proficiency at learning new things. Very simply, this stat will reflect your ability to focus on academic studies and perfect things through instruction in class as well as self instruction from text.

Athletics is your ability to do things like running, jumping, swimming, etc. Zero athletics does not mean that you are incapable of these things, but it does mean that you either lack the coordination for such things, or you generally, inexplicably suck at physical activities.

Astronomy in the wizarding world is extremely similar to any study of it in the Muggle world. Astronomy is the study of celestial bodies, their movements in the sky, and the patterns that evolve.

Medical Magic
