Abilities

Abilities are rated on a 10 point rating. Each dot represents a year of institutional instruction. While most Abilities are learned at school, there are a couple exceptions - Athletics, Alertness, Studies and Divination are all acquired talents that cannot be learned past a basic skill level by every person. Your aptitude with these abilities should reflect your attributes. Someone with very low strength and speed, for example, will not be proficient with athletics, and someone will low intelligence will not have a good handle on studies.

Herbology
Herbology is the study of magical (and some mundane) plants. This field of knowledges covers the locations and growth, gathering, preparation, and uses.

Herbology is a required study at Hogwarts, and it taught through every year.

Runes
Magical Runes are a pictorial language and divining tool used in the wizarding world.

The study of Runes is an optional practice at Hogwarts, and not offered until the third year.

Magical Creatures
The study of Magical Creatures is just what it sounds like. This area covers the locations and types of magical creatures found all over the world. It covers species, care and safety.

Magical Creatures is a required study at Hogwarts and is taught through every year.

History
History, just like in the Muggle world, is a large part of learning to be a proper witch or wizard in the wizarding world. History on HP:AR covers both magical and mundane history, and is based primarily on your background and the character's upbringing. If you were raised in the wizarding world, your knowledge of Muggle Studeis is likely vague. If you are Muggle Born, chances are that you know little of Wizarding History.

History of Magic is a required study at Hogwarts, taught through all years. Muggle Studies is a mandatory focus at Hogwarts, and classes start in year three.

Charms
The use and practice of Charms is the most basic use of a wand that a young witch or wizard can learn. Invoking a charm magically requires both wand movements and vocal cues. Generally, a charm is described as a spell that causes a physical reaction on an inanimate object.

Charms is a required study at Hogwarts, taught through all years.

Transfiguration
Transifiguration is the use of magic to alter an object or a person.

Transfiguration is a required study at Hogwarts, taught through all years.

Potions
Potion Making is the art of distilling, brewing, preparing, and administering magical concoctions. This class covers the study of ingredients, preparation, and doses of potions.

Potions is a required study at Hogwarts, taught through all years.

Arithmancy
Arithmancy is the art of Divination through numbers and numerical patterns.

Arithmancy is an optional study at Hogwarts, and classes start in year five.

Divination
Divination is the uncommon ability to look into the future and to divine patterns from the past. Most wizards and witches are not proficient with this ability, and only a dozen or so true diviners are born in each generation.

Divination is a required study at Hogwarts for years one through three, and becomes optional afterwards.

Fighting
Fighting rates your knowledge with melee, brawling, and dueling. This stat is raised by practice and instruction alone, though as in the mundane world, some people find it easier than others. As 11 year old witches and wizards, the Fighting Ability should not be a focus, and should never be more than 1 point.

Dark Arts
The study of Dark Arts is extremely uncommon and not taught or supported in any fashion at Hogwart's school. It is the study of the darker side of magic.

<Staff Note> Dark Arts Ability will be severely restricted and is left completely to staff discretion on if it will be allowed or not. Please respect and accept if you are told you are not allowed to place points into Dark Arts.

Studies
The Studies Ability measures your proficiency at learning new things. Very simply, this stat will reflect your ability to focus on academic studies and perfect things through instruction in class as well as self instruction from text.

Athletics
Athletics is your ability to do things like running, jumping, swimming, etc. Zero athletics does not mean that you are incapable of these things, but it does mean that you either lack the coordination for such things, or you generally, inexplicably suck at physical activities.

Astronomy
Astronomy in the wizarding world is extremely similar to any study of it in the Muggle world. Astronomy is the study of celestial bodies, their movements in the sky, and the patterns that evolve.

Astronomy is a required study at Hogwarts, taught through all years.

Flying
Flying with the use of a broom is a manditory study at Hogwarts, taught in the first year.

Medical Magic
Medical Magic is a Healer's best friend. While there are no "Doctors" by name in the wizarding world,

Healers and Clerics are at the forefront of mending flesh and bone. This focus cannot be used by wizards and witches that do not have a high understanding of Potions, as they are very much used. Even without the use of Potions, spells that fall under this study are many and useful.

Medical Magic is taught to a minor degree in Transifiguration at Hogwarts. The proper studies of Medical Magic are option and are not available to students until their fifth year.

Defense Against the Dark Arts
Defense Against the Dark Arts is a focus that teaches witches and wizards defensive and offensive spells that protect against, cancel, and repel those spells that have been created by the darker side of magical spells.

Defense Against the Dark Arts is a required study at Hogwarts, taught through all years.

Alertness
The Alertness Ability measures your successes with observation. This can be inherent, as well as learned.
